1 Hotel Central Park, New York City

Escaping the hustle and bustle of New York City was quite a task… until now. Thanks to 1 Hotel Central Park, visitors and locals alike can enjoy some peace and quiet from the smoky city streets.

You’ll find this fashionable hotel nestled between the Museum of Modern Art and Central Park, which is the perfect location for a hotel that’s focused on ecological sustainability and ‘going green’. Hotelier, Barry Sternlicht, wanted to celebrate and protect nature, and thus 1 Hotel Central Park was born….

A three-story blanket of ivy adorns the timber-clad façade, adding a pop of much-needed colour to soften against the robust industrial-style steel-framed windows and New York pavement. Visitors enter via two oversized steel-frame doors that have been filled with over 16 000 twigs – what a great way to start the whole experience!

The lobby area resembles somewhat of a high-end cabin: reclaimed timber and brick frame settings of tanned leather sofas and bench seats, layered with fur cushions and throws. Lush greenery is suspended in pots above the reception area, emphasizing the ‘green’ mentality this NYC refuge provides. Speaking of ‘green’, guests can check in electronically to help reduce paper usage – just one of the many innovative features you will see.

The celebration of nature continues through to the 229 guest rooms and suites, all featuring accents of reclaimed timber or brick, and is even carried out through to the bathrooms that are made with mushroom wood. The clever design of the large steel-framed walk-in showers, with Breccia Capria marble, are meant to resemble indoor greenhouses – really luxe ones, at that! A small hourglass fixed into the timber shower caddy alerts guests when they’ve spent five minutes in the shower – a fun reminder to preserve water.

Although you would think that all this timber and brick would make for a dull palette, the accents of copper, leather, fur, and stunning mood lighting and greenery, create a wholesome, sophisticated and relaxing interior – the perfect environment for some r&r.
