On Saturday 4th Feb, Belle readers were treated to an afternoon of “decadence, darling” with the King of interior design and the star of Million Dollar Decorators, Martyn Lawrence-Bullard. Hosted by Belle’s Editor in Chief, Neale Whitaker, at the Coco Republic Design Centre, guests enjoyed champagne, canapes and a chat with Martyn about his new book, working with Sir Elton John and of course, his on-going addiction to chocolate.
After having been recognised as one of the worlds top 25 interior designers by Elle Décor, with a portfolio including the mansions of celeb clients such as Cher, Sharron Osbourne and his close friend Sir Elton John, Martyn barely needed an introduction. With Neale at the helm, the interview covered Martyn’s top decorating tips and tricks, informing the audience that budget is irrelevant, always decorate with what is beautiful; you can style something expensive back with a something from a thrift store so long as both are pieces of beauty. “Look for inspiration in the everyday” explained Martyn as he pointed out a floral maxi dress in the audience “see, I could design an entire room inspired by the colours in that dress”.
For interior designers, Martyn insists the most important thing is to “choose a client who you love to work for”. Working on the 7 houses of his close friend, Sir Elton John, has been one of his most rewarding jobs because of their familiarity and friendship. Of course, Martyn says, it does help to have an enormous budget; upon leaving Sydney Martyn will go back to his latest job designing the interiors of a castle in Umbria, for a Russian oligarch.
And the question on everyone’s lips; is Martyn still famously addicted to chocolate? Thankfully no, but he does still enjoy his all time favourite, a Toblerone, on occasion. When he’s feeling particularly decadent.
