Trends & Finds

Black Glamour by Steve Cordony

As Interior Design Editor of Belle Magazine, part of my job is to select a number of design “trends” to explore each issue. After researching, mood boarding and product sourcing and so on, the end result is a styled editorial spread designed to inspire – such as the Black Glamour story I put together for the August / September edition of Belle.

Inspiration for these pages can come from all kinds of places, international fashion runways, product sourcing trips etc. For the August/September ‘International’ issue of Belle I started with a look from Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2012 runway show.

From there I began to create my mood board, sourcing images that depicted the ideas and design concepts of “Black Glamour”.

Colours and textures such as glossy blacks, rich reds, lace, crystal and gold were an obvious start.

I sourced the background wallpaper from Seneca textiles (Elitis Tenue de Soriee) and layered the shot using mirrored gothic doors to create a hallway of voids.

I then went with products that featured rich textures or that took a contemporary spin on traditional gothic period pieces. Gold or glossy finishes added the just the right amount of decadence in the room.

Intriguing one off pieces such as the horn and leather bench seat not only add a sense of mystery and intrigue, they also add another layer to the overall colour and texture palette.

Adding in quirky items such as the Oly Arthur storage ottoman gave the story a sense of character and whimsy.

The finishing touches i.e. red roses in a black ceramic urn, and black agate candle holders created drama and texture in the shot.

The lighting in the space is quiet moody and ethereal – I did this on purpose to highlight individual objects and to give the shoot a sense of theatre.

For more on this Black Glamour shoot and other styling work for Belle join me at the Coco Republic Design School Tuesday 4th September for Friday 7th September.  See you there!
