I’m excited to be speaking at Decor + Design in Melbourne next month as part of the International Seminar Series about finding success in the Australian design industry. I’ll discuss curating an interiors brand with inspired buying and you can buy tickets here.
In the lead up to the event, I spoke with talented textile designer Allegra Hicks, who’s internationally renowned for her boho-luxe aesthetic.
What is your design mantra?
Design should be timeless. I have an eclectic approach to design and love mixing the old and the new like a beautiful 18th century chair reupholstered in one of my modern fabrics.
What will you be discussing at Décor + Design?
I will be talking about my book, An Eye For Design; my inspirations and the way I work as well as my design process.
Do you follow trends when putting together concepts for clients?
Not necessarily – I try to understand my clients needs and their way of life to create a scheme that works for them. If a trend happens to work then I will include it.
What textures are your favourites to work with when designing an interior scheme?
I love combining textures. Everything from cotton and linens to wovens, velvets and silks. Texture creates depth and mood. A cotton might be used for a beach house; the velvet gives mid century elegance and silk is romantic.
Your work is mostly centered on Europe and the US, how do the two markets differ?
I would say they are actually very similar.
What does 2016 have in store for you – upcoming projects, collaborations?
2016 will see the launch of a new woven fabric collection as well as a small brass furniture collection. My collaboration with Made.com will expand to new markets with the addition of new pieces I designed for the Lulu Collection. We also have some exciting interiors projects coming up.
