Layering Your Home For Winter

Winter interiors are all about texture and layering. Changing your summer and spring throw pillows and blankets is a great way to prepare your home for the colder winter months. I would recommend switching out your lighter linen or cotton throw blankets and pillows for more luxurious options like cashmere or wool blends that lend themselves to keeping you warm as the temperature drops outside. A sheepskin or reindeer hide is a great way to add texture to any room, and I like how versatile it is—you can throw it over a chair or a bed. This trend works well in both the bedroom and living room.

Introducing natural elements within your space is also a great way to create a sense of calm and comfort this winter. Don’t be afraid to mix up materials either, natural timbers like oak and ashwood not only look great but are timeless and perfectly compliment any interior style.

The easiest way to warm up a room, especially if you have tiled or wooden flooring, is to add a statement rug. It’s important to think about the size of rug that will work within your room – oversized rugs that extend beneath both the sofa and coffee table, work well in the living room, whilst a rug that tucks half under the end of your bed looks cosy in the bedroom.

With the sun setting a lot earlier this time of year its especially important to create ambient lighting to set the mood in the evening, this can be done using lamps or candles.  The atmosphere of a room is also heavily affected by the scents you use in it, you can add warmth to your rooms by purchasing a seasonal scented candle. I’d recommend luxurious candles that contain woods or spice notes which will help create a warm environment.

Lastly, mix and match your accessories by using trays or books to elevate and display various ornaments, create layers and texture through mixing hard and soft materials like natural stones or marbles which add in creating the feeling of effortless winter style.
