London Design Festival; Design Junction 2012

A relative newcomer to the design calendar, Design Junction 2012 was held at The Sorting Office in New Oxford Street London. In the short time it has been around it has already established itself after as a leading exhibition of international design excellence – with over 100 brands showcasing each year.

The edgy vibe was highlighted by the cool venue of a deserted 1960’s postal sorting office; it’s unconventional surrounds including 12,000 square feet of space across three levels, encompassing large installations, pop-up eateries, entertainment zones and workshops.

Arriving at the ground level: A beautiful Fernandez & Wells eatery, the vibe was rustic and charming, with an open plan service counter complete with hanging cured meats. Also downstairs were products for sale, such as hand-painted glass jars, enamel bake-ware and hand-dyed papers, as well as a fine tuned selection of vintage lights and furniture.

Continuing upstairs: The Brand Showcases. Here colour was key, with green a real feature across many of the stalls. Much loved classic brand Thonet had a range hung on the wall, as well as a workshop, where you could be up close with some of their machinery and wood bending technology.

An area devoted to unique one off pieces that were sold off on the day included a marvelous polka-dot design by Tokyo Bike, with most pieces gone by the first day.

Ceramics were a stand out feature; I loved the collection of cushion-like tiles laid out on a table with embossed designs, different per tile and a group of patterned plates with gold trims looked divine.

Other standouts included leather-trimmed chemistry style glassware and leather topped stools, solid marble side tables and bowls, crocheted pendant lights and lots of brass detail including entire brass decorator items.
