Neale Whitaker on the Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards 2013

The Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards 2013 are now open for entries, what are you looking forward to seeing this year?

The awards are in their third year and have become an important event on the Australian interior design calendar, so I’m looking forward to seeing an even greater number of entries and a high level of creativity and individuality. I’m also hoping to see an increased number of entries Australia-wide.

As a judge, what will you be looking for in the winning entries?

Innovation, quality of design, relevance to brief and impact. There’s no doubt too that I’ll be looking for a bit of wow factor! Sometimes an interior can tick all the right design boxes, but if it doesn’t engage, inspire or excite you, it’s failed.

The Awards are going from strength to strength every year, what will be different about 2013?

The beauty of the Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards is that they cover all sectors from residential through hospitality, commercial and corporate, so they really showcase the breadth of Australian interior design. They’re also democratic in that they welcome entries from the entire Australian industry – from established design practices to individual designers and start-ups. This year’s awards will be bigger in terms of the number of entries, the standard of design submitted and the excitement and anticipation generated by the awards within the industry. As for the event itself, we set ourselves a high bar last year – but we’ll raise it!
