From Paris to Milan with Paola Navone

I recently became aware of Paola Navone – a Milan based architect, designer, art director, interior decorator, exhibitioner and event organiser…. Paola Navone is one creative gem!

Here is a look inside her Paris abode –

I like that she is experimental in her approach to design, there is a sense of history with this building even though it's paired back. She uses colourful handcrafted objects, lights, ceramics, sculptures – objects from her travels to create interest and personalise the space.

The light below is a sculptural, dominant feature in the room.  It's obvious that she likes to play with scale.  And with colour – the bright red chairs below are a great example of colour blocking done well.

A clear quirky sense of fun comes through in her design – her style is very relaxed and doesn't take itself too seriously.

One of the things I notice is the ladder and the chairs – is it an art installation or is it real? Does she sit up there? Is this a hideaway spot? What I love about her is how she makes you think about these spaces – there is always a sense of fun. It's about design being an experience.

Below, Navone plays with the idea of a vignette in a larger scale – through furniture, sculpture, colour and materials. There is a sense of imagination, interactivity and humour in her designs, particularly in the vase installation.  She is clearly not scared to play with design.

In the image below there is a sense of history with the bottles, cabinet, the building – it's all paired back while exposing the history of the building. She has modernised the space with new light fittings, furniture and colour blocking – merging the historical elements with contemporary fittings and accessories.

Fiona runs her own successful design practice, Echo 11 as well as teaching at Design Centre Enmore & the Coco Republic Design School.

To hear more from Fiona join the Coco Republic Design School in term 3.
