When Jonathan Adler comes to town, it’s hard not to get swept up in his playful, kitsch-y design aesthetic. So while we’re all on the bandwagon, I thought it’d be fun to write about The Parker, in Palm Springs – one of the most intriguing hotels in the world, and one of Jonathan Adler’s most inspiring interior design projects.
The hotel itself started it’s life in 1959 as a humble, concrete and cinder block, Holiday Inn. Shortly afterwards it was purchased by the singing cowboy Gene Autry who added a swimming pool, tennis court and bar. After 30 years of being called “Melody Ranch” under Autry, the hotel started a new life in the 90’s where it was affiliated with French fashion designer Givenchy and became a hot spot for celebs like Lauren Bacall, Gregory Peck, John Travolta and Barbra Streisand.
In 2003 the hotel was purchased by hotelier Jack Parker who dedicated $27 million to giving the space it’s inspired 70’s retro facelift, with designer Jonathan Adler at the helm. Now the hotel sports a tropical palm tree garden, croquet courts, four pools, three restaurants and an award-winning spa, along with an incredible interior scheme to boot.
