Proper Hotel, San Francisco

It’s no hidden secret that the charms of San Francisco are aplenty, and with the opening of Proper Hotel in late 2017, San Fran now has a design-driven boutique hotel shaped cherry on top.

Designed by globally renowned Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler, the historic Proper Hotel has been transformed into a luxury hotel with a European salon vibe. Seeking inspiration from San Francisco’s architecture and classic Beaux-Arts style from France, Kelly conjured up a back story when mapping out the interior design. “You’re in this woman’s home and it’s like a series of living rooms,” Kelly begins. “This woman lives there with a black cat called Charmaine, who hangs out on the rooftop, and you’re just waiting in her salon for her.”

Kelly and her husband, Brad Korzen, who developed the hotel with Proper Hotel partners Alex Samek and Brian De Lowe, were steadfast in retaining and restoring as many of the original elements of the early 1900s flatiron structure. Original marble floors were discovered under layers of old carpet, the lobby celling was meticulously restored and the hotel’s original elevator shafts underwent a painstaking makeover.

No scheme was spared when it came to Kelly’s signature palette of bold, juxtaposing colours, shapes and materials. Mixing and matching the old and the new and embracing furnishings and textiles evocative of an eclectic accessory collection, alongside clashing furniture and hundreds of pieces of art and wall hangings. Practically every inch and corner of the 131 guest rooms has been thoughtfully considered. To that end, you’ll discover a vibrant array of colours, textures, and wallpapers that in true Kelly Wearstler fashion, work together for a wholly original effect.

I have never personally met a pattern clash by Kelley Wearstler I didn’t like, and the Proper Hotel is no exception. Bring on the next Kelly Wearstler project, Proper Hotel, Austin.
