Trends & Finds

Surry Hills by Benn + Penna

What was once a small, dark terrace is now a light-filled modern oasis, in the heart of inner Sydney’s urban and bustling suburb of Surry Hills. Architects Benn + Penna were behind the transformation, breathing new life into the compact home.

Spaces were opened up to allow smooth flow and make the home feel larger. A heavy palette was replaced with a fresh scheme of white, grey and blonde timber. A central steel stairway is the star of the show with a contemporary design, illuminated by an abundance of natural light from an overhead skylight.

The now generously appointed spaces were paired with a minimalist scheme to maximise the sense of space. A modern Scandinavian dining setting, low lying occasional chairs and paired back bedding pieces enhance the feeling.

The finishes selected enhanced a modern aesthetic but still retain a sense of the home’s original character. The understated interiors contrast brilliantly against the textured brickwork surrounding the site, especially from the upper level balcony off the master bedroom.

One of my favourite design features is the wall of hexagon mosaic wall tiles in the back courtyard and the continuance of the kitchen cabinetry into the outdoor space. The perfect area for entertaining or to escape the world with a good book in peace and tranquility.

See the transformation in the gallery below.
