The Apollo, Tokyo

Greek cuisine meets raw Japanese design at The Apollo in Tokyo’s affluent Ginza area. The Australians behind the popular Sydney destination, Sam Christie and Jonathan Barthelmess have taken their hit menu to Japan’s capital.

On the top floor of a luxury retail hub, George Livissianis is also behind the design of The Apollo’s second offering. And as with Sydney, forget the Greek design cliche of blue and white.

A massive 160-seat space features exposed ducts and distressed concrete whilst expansive windows give panoramic views out over the Ginza skyline. Hints of marble complements blonde timber in the decor. Livissianis does minimalist contemporary design so well.

Award winning Greek dishes are a standout in a city that is home to fewer than 10 Greek restaurants. Whilst finding the produce to mirror the Sydney menu was a challenge, favourites such as roasted lamb, cheese saganaki and tarama have been instant hits with local diners.

I’m returning to Tokyo in September and as a fan of Sydney’s restaurant, this latest opening is a confirmed line item on my itinerary.
