How To

The Perfect Floral Arrangement

Often there is nothing better than coming home to beautiful fresh floral at home. Even just one vase is such a simple way to introduce colour, subtle scents or layers of lush foliage. As an interior designer, I always like to finish a big project with a beautiful bunch of blooms for extra effect.

Now that Spring has sprung, I thought I’d share a few tips on how to create your own elegant floral arrangement to help embrace the up-coming warmer months.

Layering and considering height is key. Create a lush frame with foliage ensuring the highest peak is at the back of the vase to add some height. You’ll find the stems overlap one another – this will work like a lattice, which will prove useful when you’re ready to add the flowers. Remember to remove any leaves that will sit in the water; any leaves left in the water will create bacteria, which will shorten the lifespan of your blooms.

Before adding the flowers to the greenery, cut the stems at different lengths – this will create a lovely layered look, with some flowers extending out through the arrangement, and others cushioned neatly between the leaves and shoots. Add smaller flowers to bring in subtle pops of colour throughout, and then add the bigger accent blooms for a wow-factor. Carefully place these flowers in the bare spots, keeping in mind that you don’t want to go over the top; you want to keep the arrangement looking organic and not stuffed!

If in doubt, buy a few bunches of your favourite greenery – my choice is Eucalyptus Spray for a wonderful touch of Australiana. You can never go wrong with beautiful layers of foliage. A chic little posey in a short vase also does the trick elegantly.

For a very glamourous base to the arrangement, have a look at Jonathan Adler’s Future Circles Vase and Bel Air Mega Scoop Vase, both available at Coco Republic. They’re sure to add that extra sense of luxury to your interior.
