Interior spaces

Casa No Tempo, Portugal

Aires Mateus Architecture Firm, together with the owners João and Andreia Rodrigues, transformed an old family farm into a modern retreat in the rural landscape of the Alentejo region of Portugal.

The ultra minimalist design aimed to reclaim the natural beauty of the rural landscape by opening each room to the outside environment through large, accessible full height windows and doors.  The interior is decorated sparsely, with minimal furniture and bright white, bare walls, so that the view outside is the key focus from inside.  I really like the restraint in this design, it’s not how I’d decorate my Portuguese farm, but I can certainly appreciate the beauty in this simplicity.

The pool in particular is a real stand out – a perfect square island located in a sea of green farmland with an elegant gradient entrance.   The contemporary design is reminiscent of the topography of a natural beach or lagoon.  Stunning.

The final structure of this design, which is still in the process of being built, takes the shape of a square, labyrinth-like, walled garden. It will comprise one hectare of interconnected areas, housing an array of cultivated flowers and vegetables, along with a community agricultural structure to support local farming.
