NATURAL MATERIALS:

OUR GUIDE TO TIMBER

Meticulously crafted by expert artisans, our wooden furniture brings natural beauty and time-honoured artistry to interiors. An organic material that only gets more charming with time, wood is also kinder to the planet – renewable, recyclable and easily repurposed. From live edge timber tables to elegantly carved oak chairs, our wooden furniture retains the intrinsic characteristics – grain patterns, knots and natural edges – that make each piece one of a kind. And with the right care, this natural beauty can be preserved for years to come.

THE BEAUTY OF IMPERFECTION

Meticulously crafted by expert artisans, timber furniture brings natural beauty and a rich sense of history to any interior. As an organic material, wood only grows more charming with time, developing a unique character that tells its own story.

Each piece of timber is inherently unique, carrying the distinct story of the tree from which it came. Just like every tree has its own growth patterns and markings, so too does each timber product boast individual grain patterns, colour variations, and subtle imperfections that ensure your furniture is truly one-of-a-kind.

DESIGNED FOR ENDURANCE

Timber is a remarkably resilient material, offering lasting durability that stands the test of time. Our timber products are crafted using well-seasoned woods, ensuring stability and strength. With proper care, including regular dusting and immediate attention to spills, timber furniture can maintain its optimum condition and exquisite appearance for years to come, promising a lifetime of enjoyment.

TYPES OF WOOD

At Coco Republic, we use only the finest materials, always striving to find the perfect balance between functionality and elegance. In addition to solid timber, we employ two specialist techniques to craft our pieces: wood appliqué and wood veneer.

SOLID TIMBER

— With its premium quality and beautiful finish, our solid timber furniture is constructed entirely of genuine wood.

— Each piece retains the wood’s natural shape and features, ensuring no two items are exactly alike.

— Natural imperfections – such as splits, cracks and knots – are inherent to solid timber and may develop over time. These minor irregularities do not compromise the furniture’s integrity but instead enhance its authenticity and charm.

— Our live edge wood pieces, like the Colmar Live Edge Dining Table, are a style of furniture that incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the design. Instead of refining or smoothing out the edges, the original contours, knots and grain patterns of the wood are retained, celebrating the natural beauty and uniqueness of each tree.

WOOD APPLIQUE

Wood appliqué is a decorative woodworking technique where thin, ornamental pieces of carved wood are hand-applied to the surface of furniture. With their three-dimensional effect, these embellishments add intricate detailing, texture and depth to a design. The Piedmont Sideboard and Piedmont Round Dining Table are defined by their wood appliqué finish, which enhances their elegance and character.

WOOD VENEER

A woodworking technique that has been used in furniture-making for many centuries, wood veneer is the process of applying thin slices of wood to both sides of a strong core surface, like particle boards or plywood.

— Unlike solid timber, wood veneer does not expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, so it maintains its shape better in varying conditions.

— Wood veneer retains all the beauty and warmth of the natural material while minimising the inconsistencies found in hardwood. Our Oslo range, for example, has a consistent, sleek finish thanks to its engineered timber and oak veneer construction.

— Veneer furniture also tends to be lighter than solid wood pieces, making it easier to move and transport.

WOOD'S NATURAL VARIATIONS

The beauty of wood lies in its unique grain patterns, knots, natural edges and subtle colour variations that make each piece truly one of a kind. These intrinsic characteristics are not flaws but part of what makes natural wood so appealing.

The natural variations in both veneer and solid wood furniture do not compromise the material’s integrity or quality. Instead, they are a reflection of several factors:

Wood speciesDifferent types of trees have distinct colour variations, grain patterns and other natural characteristics. For example, maple is lighter and more uniform, while walnut is darker with more pronounced grain patterns.

Climate and environmental conditions The way a tree grows over time influences its appearance, creating unique textures and hues.

Grain direction and veneer cut – the way the wood is cut affects its final look, adding to its distinctive charm.

HOW TO CARE FOR WOOD FURNITURE

With proper care, wooden furniture only gets more beautiful with age, making a house truly feel like a home. As with all natural materials, it’s important to understand the type of wood used before following these care steps. Different wood species have distinct characteristics and may require specialised maintenance

TIMBER CARE TIPS

— Using a damp microfibre cloth or soft brush, properly dust the wooden surface to remove any loose surface dust and prevent dirt from building up.

— Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the finish of your wooden furniture. We recommend a diluted solution of mild dish soap and warm water, which is a gentle option for most sealed or varnished wood finishes.

— After cleaning, always wipe away any soap residue with a damp, clean cloth. Then, remove any remaining moisture with a dry, absorbent cloth, paying close attention to any corners, crevices or decorative details where water could collect and cause warping over time.

— Enhance the wood’s natural beauty while providing additional protection by applying a suitable furniture polish, wax or oil. Always apply in the direction of the wood grain for best results.

— Avoid excessive heat and moisture by keeping your furniture away from radiators, fireplaces or vents. Also, try to keep your wooden furniture out of direct sunlight as prolonged exposure can cause it to fade, dry or crack.
